Zaporozhie

Zaporizhzhya is a city in south-eastern Ukraine, the administrative center of Zaporozhye region with a population of about 1 million, was founded in 1770 as a fortress on the banks of the Dnipro River. Climate is temperate continental. The name of the city is associated with Ukrainian Cossacks lived on the Khortitsa island the capital of Zaporozhian Sech.

Khortica is the biggest island on the Dnepro River. It is famous for its unique nature and numerous archeological finds, beginning from Scythians, ending with Cossacks that founded the Cossacks republic in the 16 th century; its center was situated on the island. The Cossacks called the area Zaporozhie. The museum of the Cossacks' history, with its unique expositions is one of the most attractive sights of the city.

Khortitsa is a unique union of flora and fauna. It is the biggest river island in the world and one of the most pollution-free places in Europe.

The Khortytsa Island is the real historical and cultural monument of Ukraine history.

The city was very much an 'engineering city' during Soviet times, with all the consequences in terms of pollution that might be expected. The move to market economy since independence of Ukraine has seen the demise of some of these concerns, which has certainly improved the air quality.

At present the Zaporizhzhya is large industrial, scientific and cultural city in Ukraine.

Zaporozhye Region is well known of its picturesque places, wonderful views of the sea and river preserves.

The central highway of Zaporozhie - prospekt Lenina - is the longest avenue in Europe. Its length is about 12km.
